The Treehouse - Education Design, KCAD
Our mission was to design a multi-purpose, multi-user learning commons in 25,000 sq. ft. But as many of us know, this is just the bare surface of what it takes to design a successful learning commons. This space needed to include a reception area, a traditional library, peer-to-peer learning areas, a digital learning area, clean Flex Lab services, a retail / textbook space, Material ConneXtion, testing services, student art / design display space, collaboration space, studio space, and student lockers.
Process.
Throughout the early stages of this project, we spent an entire month gathering research from internal and external sources. This research informed our design decisions from there on out. We did existing structure studies - specifically roof studies. We did sketches of design ideas as we had them. We did brainstorm sessions about what each space inside the learning commons had to have. We did a creative cart observation with current students, staff, and faculty - this consisted of setting out a table with simple crafting materials and leaving it to see how users interacted with it. In addition to this, we sent out surveys, conducted interviews, observed how students currently use the space, and researched case studies and outside sources to see how other elements could grow our design.
Culture Video.
When considering ways to present, a video describing KCAD's culture was appropriate to not only give personal testimonies from students, staff, and faculty, but it also provides a solid foundation for us to work from with our research.
Final Design
As our team decided how to approach this, we settled on three key attributes this commons should have. First, inclusivity. It should be fitting to all majors and all users. Second, united. It should exhibit KCAD pride in the college and community. Lastly, playful. It should be an upbeat, lighthearted environment that provides a mental break in addition to a diverse work environment.
I was personally responsible for the design and build of the 3rd floor as well as the initial design of the play structure. However, our team approached this as a highly collaborative design process, so each of our ideas and design can be found in every area.
